The lumber firm of Pope and Talbot laid out the town of Port Gamble in 1853. It served a lumber mill that was, for a long period, the oldest continuing facility in the U.S., closing in 1995. The Seattle architect Charles Bebb designed a number of the buildings within this historic district in the early 20th century.
