An small island within the Metropolitan Tract--located in the middle of the University Street between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue--was, since the early 1910s, a garden with flowers and carefully trimmed shrubs. In 1924, however, the garden was removed to make way for a service station, pumping gas for motorists attending shows at the nearby Metropolitan Theatre.
