This mega-church, designed by LPA Architect's David Gilmore, occupied 120 acres in Orange County, CA; its complex consisted of seven buildings, in addition to the sanctuary. Aspects of the church design were derived from the nearby Fashion Island Mall in Newport Beach.

Pastor Rick Warren and his wife, Kay, moved to California's Saddleback Valley in 1979; they established their Saddleback Community Church on Easter of the next year with 205 parishoners. In 2008, this Christian congregation had branches in Lake Forest, CA, San Clemente, CA, Irvine, CA and Corona, CA.
