On 04/16/2009, Salem's Salem Center was one of three Oregon shopping malls (including Pioneer Place in Portland and Rogue Valley Mall in Medford) named in the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing of General Growth Properties, Incorporated. General Properties of Chicago, IL, fell into $27 billion of debt, in part for its impetuous purchases of other real estate entities during the early-mid 2000s, most notably, the 2004 takeover of the Rouse Company of MD.
