The Chrysler House was planned and constructed in 1952-1953; its completion date was 06/1953. The house was built on speculation.
The house was notable for its construction on a 30% grade in the Cardinell Heights Neighborhood overlooking Portland, OR; steel piles, once used in the Los Angeles transit system, were sunk 10-15 feet to reach bedrock; all piles were topped with concrete, and trusses of ring-connected beams laid on top of them to form a base floor. 2" x 10" trusses were laid on top of the trusses to support a wood-frame house 75' x 22', long and narrow, with rooms organized to maximize views from each. The house's exterior was sided by redwood boards and topped with a shed roof. Cost of the Chrysler House was $25,000, and had 1,650 square feet, calculating to $15.15 per square foot.
