This airport, operated by the California Air National Guard, occupies land on which the United States Army Air Force's Hammer Field was founded in 06/1944. It shares the former Hammer Field site with a civilian airfield now known as the Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

The California Air National Guard operated two properties within the Fresno Yosemite International Airport, this main base, and a separate Munitions Storage Area.
