Father Matthew Kelly of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Barbara, led the effort to build Holy Cross Church in 1958. Holy Cross replaced Saint Joseph's Church that was demolished to make way for a new section of Highway 101. Monsignor Thomas Hayes served as the first pastor; a new parish house built in 1979 was named for him.
