John Harold Dollar (b. 1887), son of the lumber and shipping baron, Captain Robert Dollar (1844-1932) commissioned this 241-foot tall, 16-story office building. Robert Dollar made a fortune operating timber companies in Canada, Upper MI and CA, and created a shipping line initially to transport his lumber. The family rapidly expanded its steamship operations, creating passenger steamship service known as the "Dollar Line." George Kelham, who designed some of the tallest skyscrapers in San Francisco during the 1920s, produced this composition.
