Operated by the Woman's Home Missionary Society, the Methodist Hospital of Southern California #3 was erected in 1914-1915 on the site of an existing residence that was renovated to become the Methodist Hospital of Southern California #2; the house at 2826 South Hope Street served the community for about five years, from 1909-1914. In Fund-raising by the Woman's Home Missionary Society had begun by 1913, and by the next year, enough money had been collected to raze the old dwelling and build a 100-bed hospital on the same site at a cost of $500,000. The hospital remained at this location between 1915-1957, when it was sold to Los Angeles County. Following the sale, the Methodist Hospital of Southern California moved to Arcadia, CA.
Methodist Hospital of Southern California #3 was the first hospital in the region to have been built of reinforced concrete construction; this was becoming more standard for public buildings following the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.
An addition was made to this facility in 1925, to increase hospital capacity by 125 beds to 225. This addition cost more than the construction of the whole first hospital, totaling about $600,000.
