The National Park Service began admitting automobiles to Yellowstone Park in 1915. Waves of auto travelers descended on the park, necessitating for a level of accommodation between the posh Lake Yellowstone Hotel (renovated by Seattle architect, Robert Reamer, in 1903) and the rudimentary Yellowstone campgrounds or tourist cabins. In 1926, Reamer designed this mid-priced lodge, catering to a mass clientele.
