The Seattle architect Edwin Walker Houghton (1856-1927) designed Sutton's Grand Opera House in Butte, MT, in 1902. Houghton had great success building theatres for vaudeville impresarios between 1898-1910, most notably for John Cort (1859-1929), the Seattle-based developer of the first vaudeville circuit in the US, the Northwestern Theatrical Circuit. Houghton and Cort's Grand Opera House (1898-1900, demolished) in Seattle dated just a few years earlier than its Butte counterpart.
