Swedish Hospital was founded in 1910. In 2007, its operations were throughout the Puget Sound Region; according to a Swedish web site posting of 01/04/07: "Swedish encompasses three hospital campuses – First Hill, Cherry Hill (formerly Providence) and Ballard – totaling 1,245 licensed beds, a new freestanding emergency room and specialty center in Issaquah, Swedish Home Care Services and Swedish Physicians – a network of 12 primary-care clinics located throughout the Greater Seattle area." (See "News and Events: 01/04/07 Work Begins on Dedicated, Leading-Edge Orthopedic Facility at Swedish Medical Center/First Hill Campus,"Accessed 07/17/2009.)

Swedish Medical Center undertook a new new outpatient center and medical office building on a land adjacent to its current hospital in Ballard. Projections called for work on this $31.5 million facility to begin in 2009. Work was set to conclude in Spring 2010.
