Building History

In 1925, the J.C. Penney Company operated its only Seattle store at 5403 Ballard Avenue in the Ballard neighborhood. At the time, Glen H. Putman was the Manager of the J.C. Penney Company Store in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.(See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1925, p. 1118.) The store opened either in late 1924 or early 1925. (It was listed in the Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1925, but not that of 1924.

This small-scale Penney's Department Store closed c. 1975. By 1967, the two largest Penney's locations were in Downtown Seattle and at the Northgate Shopping Center. (See J.C. Penney's advertisement, Seattle Times, 01/02/1967, p. 45.)
