Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart (1823-1902) and four Sisters of Providence journeyed from their home convent in Montreal to resettle in Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory, on 12/08/1856. An amazingly industrious group, they proceeded to set up some of the first hospitals and schools in the Pacific Northwest. Their order erected the Providence School for Young Ladies, a two-story, wood-frame building, in 1863, and operated it until 1875. The school was operated by an entity called the "Sisters of Charity of the House of Providence," incorporated in the Washington Territory in 1859. While it ceased being a school long before, the building was still standing in 1907, when Albert Henry Barnes photographed it.
