The Dairy quit operations in 2003; demolition of the plant and surrounding buildings occurred in 05/2007. A huge, block-wide pit was constructed for the foundations of a new 6-story mixed-use project, but two anchor tenants, both grocery stores, refused to sign leases, and the development hole sat vderelict for months. The land-owners had owned the property for years, and lost only potential rental income from the site.
