Julius Meier, a businessman who co-founded the Meier and Frank Department Store chain in Portland, OR, purchased a property on the Columbia River as a rural retreat from the pressures of running a company and a state. Meier retained the Portland, OR, architect, Herman Brookman, to design the country residence in the 1920s (after 1924). Meier also served as Governor of Oregon from 1930-1934. The Meier Family sold the land to the First Presbyterian Church of Portland in 1950, who developed and operated the Menucha Retreat and Conference Center on the former estate.
