Two Indiana school teachers, David and Jenny Curry, developed Camp Curry in 1899 as a low-cast place to stay in Yosemite National Park. In the early years, Camp Curry offered 12 canvas tent cabins, but this grew to hundreds in the mid-20th century. The camp became so popular as a result of tourists arriving by automobile, elaborate facilites were added by 1922 including a dance pavilion, pool hall, soda fountain, service station and mechanics' shop.
In 2008, Curry Village had 610 canvas and wood cabins arrayed in rows.
A rockslide in 1996 brought 162,000 tons of rock ruined part of Curry village and killing one park visitor. A 1999 slide killed one visitor; on 10/08/2008, another slide ruined cabins and trees nearby to Curry Village; this slide injured 3, including at least one child.
