The University of California, Santa Barbara, occupied two parcels of land within the city limits of Santa Barbara, CA, between 1944-1949. In 1948-1949, the Regents of the University of California decided to develop a new campus outside of the city, near Goleta, CA, on a 408-acre (some sources state a 409-acre) site. This second campus had previously been a U.S. Marine Corps base during World War II, and was located directly on the Pacific coast. Due to rising university enrollments in the 1950s, the State of California changed the original name of Santa Barbara College to "University of California, Santa Barbara" in 1958. The original intention was to keep this campus small, around 3,000-3,500 students;
