The Housing Authority of Portland received $35 million from the US Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office's Hope VI Program. This money went to build approximately 850 new dwellings units set on 82 acres; the types of housing varied from single family houses to apartments with more than 30 units. Seven acres were set aside for parks and open space, and Green building methods were employed at all points possible, with all units having Energy Star appliances. An Housing Authority of Portland emphasized the importance of locating bus and light rail routes nearby to help to ameliorate the city's traffic problems.
