On 09/11/2008, White Pass Ski Resort won the right to expand its operations into land in the Hogback Basin, an area contested as sensitive by environmentalists. In a Federal Court ruling, the resort won the right to build ski slopes and a day lodge on 800 acres of land it owns in the Hogback Basin. The 800 acres was withdrawn from federal wilderness protection during the Reagan Administration in 1984, but environmental groups had lobbied to keep the area unspoiled since that time. The Sierra Club was one of the plaintiffs in the case, along with the Hogback Preservation Association.
