The Bryan Residence was built of reinforced concrete; at this time, techniques of reinforcing concrete were still somewhat experimental. Because of seismic hazards on the Pacific Coast, a great deal of experimentation with concrete reinforcement was undertaken in CA, by Ernest Ransome (1844-1917), Charles Whittlesey and others. It was illustrated in Homes and Gardens of the Pacific Coast, Volume II, Los Angeles, Frank Calvert, Editor, T. Ross Ditty, Associate Editor (Beaux-Arts Society Publishers, Beaux-Arts Village, WA, 1913).
