Oilman Edward Doheny, Sr., (1856-1935) and his second wife, Carrie Estelle Betzold Doheny (1875-1958), bought the former Oliver Posey House at 8 Chester Place in 1901, and gradually began purchasing neighboring parcels by 1915. All told, the Dohenys bought seven nearby houses to extend their holdings within the gated and exclusive Chester Place sub-division.
Mount Saint Mary's College renovated the Doheny Carriage House into an art studio in 1973.
