When it opened in 2009, this $6.5 million exhibit was heated and cooled by a geothermal energy system. According to a Seattle Times article by Peyton Whitely of 08/04/2008: "Zoo officials expect the savings in electricity over the 20-year life of the exhibit will be equal to the cost of powering 43 homes for a year." (p. B1) The system was expected to cost $210,000, $65,000 of which was paid from a grant by Seattle City Light.
