Railroad yards originally occupied this 100-acre site that was turned into the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane. Expo 74's land then became Riverfront Park after four years of renovation. President Jimmy Carter dedicated Riverfront Park on 05/05/1978 before a crowd of 50,000.
In 2008, a YMCA that had occupied land in the park moved out, thus making available new land for development; additionally, Spokane officials had discussed of locating a science museum in Riverfront Park at this time.
