Overview
The Sisters of Providence have been very active in setting up and staffing hospitals, schools and social welfare facilities since arriving in the Pacific Northwest in 1856. Members of the order traveled transcontinentally from the mother church in Montreal to provide personnel for its farflung charitable endeavors. The first undertaking was the formation by Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart was St. Joseph Hospital at Fort Vancouver, WA. In 1887, nuns of the Sisters of Providence opened this hospital in Olympia, WA. With various alterations and additions it served the citizens of Thurston County from 1887 until about 1924.
Building History
Construction began on the Sisters of Providence Saint Peter Hospital #1 in 04/1887, and concluded by 09/1887. A staff of four women treated 225 people in its first year of operation. Demand became so great for its services that an addition was made in 1889 doubling the facility's size. A school of nursing opened here in 1919, offering instruction for nuns who would staff other hospitals run by the order.
Alteration
The Sisters of Providence made an addition in 1889 to double the hospital's capacity to 523 beds.
Demolition
This hospital has been rrazed. The Providence Saint Peter Hospital #2 Olympia, WA,opened on a new site in 1924.
