Portland, OR-born businessman and investor Norton Simon (02/05/1907-06/02/1993) was President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hunt Foods, Incorporated, from 1943-1968; two of Simon's other business holdings, Canada Dry Corporation and McCalls Publishing, were combined with Hunt Foods in 1968 to create the conglomerate, Norton Simon, Incorporated.) Director of the Executive Committee of the Northern Pacific Railway Company, 1951- ; Director, Harbor Plywood Company, 1951- ; In the 1960s, Simon began accumulating a significant art collection, and by the 1970s, the local art museum, the Pasadena Art Museum, was having financial difficulties, due to a $1 million operating debt and $850,000 in building loans. Simon agreed to pay for building costs and loan items from his extensive collection in 1974. The Pasadena Art Museum agreed to devote 75% of its space for Simon's art and would rename itself in his honor. In 1987, He promised to donate his collection to UCLA, but the donation was rescinded. It remained with the Norton Simon Museum.
