Building History
Carleton Huiskamp (born 12/11/1881 in Keokuk, IA-d. 05/18/1939 in Iowa City, IA) was the son of Henry Christian Huiskamp (born 05/23/1830 in Amsterdam, Netherlands-d. 08/17/1906 in Saint Louis, MO), President of the American Guaranty Fund Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Saint Louis, MO. Carleton attended Phillips-Andover Academy and subsequently held a number of jobs during his lifetime. He began work as a bank clerk at the 3rd National Bank, Saint Louis, and later gained employment as a contract department clerk for the Home Telephone Company in Detroit, MI. Husikamp then moved to Seattle, WA, by about 1907, where worked briefly with the Rainier Foundry and later with the McConnell Engineering Company, Tacoma, WA, in 1907-1908. After 1909, he developed his own real estate and loan business until about 1920. He served as the of the President of the Ketcham Hide and Fur Company in Seattle, in 1920. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1920, p. 978.) After this, he became the manager of the Jordan Storage and Distribution Comapny in Seattle between 1920 and 1929. He retired in 1931 and moved to Keokuk, IA. He passed away in Iowa City, IA, on 05/18/1939.
Carleton Huiskamp married Laura Eliza McVay (born 12/08/1885-d. 04/25/1943 in Keokuk, IA) on 10/30/1907 in Seattle, and they had three daughters, Ann Huiskamp McDermond, Julie Huiskamp Steffen and Carla Huiskamp Logan. The family resided at this address from either late 1912 or early 1913 until approximately 1923. They lived at 1202 Boylston Avenue by 1924. (See R.L.
