Building History

Owned by Samuel H. Levin, the New Balboa Theatre opened 02/07/1926, causing confusion with the first Balboa Theatre, which changed its name to the "Westwood" as a result. It accommodated 800 viewers originally. The Levin Family operated the theatre from 1926 until 2001, when it was leased to the Landmarks Theatre chain.

Building Notes

The exterior had austere Spanish Colonial Revival styling, appropriate to its name.

Alteration

The Balboa Theatre #2 suffered a fire in 1978, that triggered a remodeling effort. The single auditorium was halved into two projection rooms at this time.
