AKA: Balboa Theater #1, San Francisco, CA; Westwood Theatre, San Francisco, CA
Structure Type: built works - performing arts structures - theatres
Designers: Reid Brothers, Architects (firm); James William Reid (architect); Merritt Jonathan Reid (architect)
Dates: constructed 1922
The Balboa Theatre #1 opened 12/23/1922, and lasted only about ten years before its demolition.
This small neighborhood theatre, seating 520, had become the Westwood Theatre five years after opening, in order to differentiate itself from another Balboa Theatre in San Francisco, CA. Competition with larger, more luxurious nearby movie palaces doomed the Balboa Theatre #1.
Demolished; a grocery store replaced the Balboa Theatre #1 in the early 1930s.
