Overview

Due to her connections with Grace Merriam Fisher, (and the Hearst Family), Morgan designed a number of YWCAs across CA.

Building History

Morgan designed this YWCA building after an Italian Renaissance palazzo, for her UC Berkeley sorority sister, Grace Merriam Fisher, who in 1913 served as the President of Oakland's YWCA board. Sara Boutelle indicated that Morgan and Fisher may have planned the building in concert. See Sara Boutelle, "Some Professional Roles," in Women in American Architecture: A Historic and Contemporary Perspective, Susana Torre, ed., (New York, NY: Whitney Library of Design, 1977), p. 82.
