This facility replaced a jail that occupied the same site from 1893-1897. A fire destroyed the jail in 1897. A combined statehouse and jail--designed by the Mankato, MN/Seattle, WA-based firm, Thayer and Hanson--was rebuilt on the same spot, completed in 1903.
The Juneau City Hall stood just below the Federal Courthouse and Jail on a prominence above the city.
