Overview
In 1922, the Star Machinery Company had its operational headquarters located at 1731-1741 1st Avenue South. At this time, Christian Rabel was the company president, Victor E. Rabel, its vice-president, and Otto R. Rabel, the secretary-treasurer. It had a shop and yards located nearby at 2nd Avenue South and Horton Street. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1922, p. 1355.)
Building History
In 1927, the Star Machinery Company occupied at least some space at 1741 1st Avenue South. (See The ABC British Columbia Lumber Trade Directory and Yearbook, 1927, p. 175.) In the 1930s, the Star Machinery Company sold high-grade wire rope to the logging companies. It,continued to occupy the building until at least 1952, and probably longer.(See the American Machinist, vol. 96, issues 10-13, 1952, p. 365.) (In 1940, one periodical referred to the company as the"California Star Machinery Company," See The Timberman, vol. 41, 1940, p.72.)
In 1961, the Cascade Handling Equipment maintained its business at this address.(See PVP: Paint and Varnish Production, 1961, vol. 51, p. 214.)
The building's ownership was held by the Manning Family from at least 1992 until 2012. On 05/22/1992, the Sunrise Printing Company sold it to Joseph R. and Lorna M. Manning and their heirs/representatives.
The McCann Seattle Advertising firm leased space at 1741 1st Avenue South in 2011. (See Directory of Marketing Services Entrepreneur Resources, Technology Media and Communications, [Menlo Park, CA: Boogar Lists, 01/30/2011], p. 151.
On 10/04/2012, the C.C. Filson Company purchased the mixed-used building from a legal entity called "1741 First Avenue South 10050274 LLC," (a LLC registered in DE). for $7,450,000.
Building Notes
In 2018, this commercial building contained 66,138 gross square feet, 52,280 net. When used as the C.C. Filson Company's World Headquarters at this time, it contained a 10,534-square-foot office space, a 10,435-square-foot office space, a 9,759-square-foot office space, a 2,560-square-foot warehouse, a 6,621-square-foot retail store, a 1,385-square-foot retail store, 11,324-square-foot of industrial light manufacturing space, 658 square feet of basement storage and a 13,200-square-foot basement parking garage. The complex occupied a 17,760-square-foot (0.41-acre) lot in 2018.
