Building History

Since 1908, Cole's Restaurant has operated in the basement of the Pacific Electric Building, a major landmark at 118 East 6th Street in Downtown Los Angeles, CA. Henry Cole was the establishment's founder. Cole's originally featured live entertainment and cocktails, but later concentrated solely on food, featuring its renowned French Dip sandwiches.

Both Cole's and neighboring Philippe's The Original restaurant claimed to have invented the French Dip/

Alteration

Cole's closed in 03/2007. The LA Beat web site has said of the restaurant: "Closed briefly in March 2007 after 99 years in business, Cole’s was brought back to its original splendor with a new owner in 2008 with vermillion red wallpaper, a long mahogany wooden bar, a copper penny tiled floor, Tiffany-style lamps, old photographs mounted on the walls and a back speakeasy."
