Planning for the Seattle Freeway, a 20-mile portion of U.S. Interstate Highway 5 through the city of Seattle, began as early as 1955; on 04/01/1957, the Washington State Highway Department created an office to acquire property located in the path of the proposed freeway. Agents for the state acquired about 4,500 parcels of land, most of it single and multi-family residential, at fair market rates. The eminent domain rates were set by two third-party appraisers. The route from Seattle to Everett, WA, was dedicated on 02/03/1965.
