Fund-raising for the rebuilding of the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego began a month after it had demolished in an arson fire. On 06/08/1979, plans were announced for a new group of buiildings for live theatre on this site; the complex was to consist of the new Old Globe, the Cassius Carter Center and the Festival Stage. Helen Edison donated money in memory of her husband, Simon Edison, for which this new three-venue complex was named. The Edisons made the largest philanthropic donation to the Old Globe that had been made in San Diego up to that time. Ground-breaking for the Simon Edison Centre for the Performing Arts occurred on 12/01/1979.
Construction began on 04/26/1978 of the Festival Stage, located next to the site of the first Old Globe Theatre. This venue seated 620. The Festival Stage, like the first Old Globe Theatre, was destroyed by arson; this occurred 10/29/1984. Ground was broken for the new Lowell Davies Festival Theatre on 03/06/1985; Trustees of the Old Globe named this theatre for Lowell Davies, who served as a board member of the company for 40 years.
