The first venue for the Palm Springs Desert Museum was in a room within the La Plaza Arcade complex on Palm Canyon Drive. The museum, dedicated to the desert environment and its native inhabitants, stayed in this cramped location for only a few years. It moved next to a portion of the Palm Springs Public Library. Its relocated a third time to the unused wing of a hospital in 1947. The museum stayed here from 1947-1958, when a new 10,000-square-foot building was erected.
