This retirement facility for German-Americans opened in 1909, following a fire that destroyed the first Altenheim building. The Altenheim Association formed in the Bay Area in 1890. This retirement home closed in 2002 because of financial difficulties, but has since reformed. Its goal continues to provide housing for the elderly and to promote understanding of the German culture.
