William Hays Perry arrived in California in 1853, drawn like so many others, by the allure of the Gold Rush. He did not rich panning gold. Rather, he worked as a carpenter initially and then made investments in forest acreage and logging which greatly expanded his assets. In the 1860s, he worked in the local gas utility and a bank, in addition to lumber. This house was erected in 1876, 18 years after he was married to Elizabeth Dalton Perry. They lived here only 2 years, before selling the dwelling to Judge Stephen C. Hubbell, a railroad executive and a founder of the University of Southern California.

The house was moved in 1975 to its current site at Heritage Square and was restored by the National Society of the Colonial Dames America.
