Building History
German-born Judge Charles Silent (1842-1918), a partner in the influential Los Angeles legal firm of Houghton, Silent, and Campbell, created this exclusive, 12-plot, residential development on 13 acres located behind Saint Vincent's Church, at Figueroa Street and West Adams Boulevard. (Some have indicated that the original parcel was 20 acres in size.) Silent laid out Chester Place in 1895 with the 12 gated homes being completed around 1900. The tract was named for his son.
The notable Oliver Posey House #1, later home to the oilman Edward L. Doheny, Sr., stood at 8 Chester Place.
A web site produced describing the houses of the Chester Place sub-division noted proudly: "Chester Place is the oldest gated community in Los Angeles, California, dedicated in 1899." (See "Chester Place,"
