The New Almaden mine has produced the most quicksilver mine in the U.S. This mine was producing 1500 flasks of mercury for the San Jose Mining Company and 9 other lessees in 1963. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1961.
This mine operated from 1847 to 1976. Since 1976, government agencies have investigated the seepage of mercury and other contaminants from the mine into local water supplies.
