The pier floor connecting it to the Long Beach Civic Auditorium collapsed 05/24/1913. Thirty-eight people, lined up to enter the auditorium, were killed in the accident. A supporting girder was ill-protected from salt-air, sunlight and rain, and gave way under an abnormally large load.
