Soils under this large concrete structure began to settle by 11/1918, imperiling the whole project. Engineers came up with two corrective measures, submitted in minority and majority reports in 04/1919. It was decided to shore up the grain elevator (which had attained two-thirds of its eventual height) with 2,600 pinch pilings driven under the building. This stopped the subsidence.
