Building Notes

In 1921, architect architect Robert Hall Orr also drew up plans for a recreation building for the 1st Christian congregation, containing a gymnasium and pool.

On 12/16/1920, the segmental concrete dome of this church collapsed, due to an inadequate system of steel framing. The church was almost finished at this time; fortunately for the workers, the accident occurred at lunchtime when few were on the site. (See First Christian Church Recreation Building note, Southwest Builder and Contractor, 06/24/1921, p. 14.)

The 1st Christian Church was razed through eminent domain in 1979. (Thank you to Richard Villa for information on First Christian Church. Email from Richard Villa to the author, 04/08/2014.)
