The Balboa Theatre opened on 03/28/1924 at a reported cost of $800,000; the initial owner was Robert Hicks, who had been involved with movie exhibition in San Diego since about 1910. it closed as a movie theatre in the 1970s, prompting the City of San Diego to purchase the property in 1985;

This Spanish Colonial Revival Style theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, level of significance: Local.

In 2003, the City of San Diego spent approximately $16 million to renovate the Balboa and to open it as a multi-purpose performance space;
