Ellsworth Storey originally designed this idiosyncratic church with Tudor Revival details for the Beacon Hill Congregational Church; this group owned the building until 1966, when the Mars Hill Baptist Church purchased it. It became known subsequently as the Beacon Hill First Baptist Church.

The Seattle Landmarks Board declared the Beacon Hill First Baptist Church a City of Seattle Landmark. Date introduced/referred: April 27, 1981 Date passed: December 28, 1981 Status: Passed Vote: 6-0 Date of Mayor's signature*: January 4, 1982;

Asphalt shingles replaced the original wood shingles on the roof. The congregation had a exterior door removed in 1931.
