Building History
Groundbreaking for the Stanislaus County-City of Modesto Performing Arts Center occurred 04/27/2004; the building was completed in 09/2007. In 1999, the projected cost was set at $30 million, one-third of which was derived from a Robert and Marie Gallo Family donation. Financial issues caused delays in both planning and construction.
Building Notes
Preparing for the construction of their new facility, officials toured other recent performing arts centers in California, including the Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville, AR, Christopher Cohen Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. Early specifications called for the building to include a 1,200-seat theater (what is now called the 1250-seat Mary Stuart Rogers Theater), a 444-seat theater (named the Foster Family Theater), and an art gallery. The project planning consultants included: Knudson-Benson Associates, Architects and Engineers, Seattle, WA, RDC Project Development, Langley, WA, and Mitze Productions, Malibu, CA. The three groups specialized in various aspects of the financing, planning, construction and operation of arts centers. Tel: Local: 209-338-2100 (2007).
