Robert and Matilda McHenry built this Italianate dwelling. Robert McHenry was an early landowner and banker in the Modesto area and the scale of this mansion indicated his wealth. The McHenrys lived in this house for sixteen years, between 1883-1896. Their son, Oramil McHenry owned the mansion between 1896-1906. From 1923-1976, the house was compartmentalized and used as an apartment house. The Julio R. Gallo Foundation purchased the historic property in 1976 and presented it to the City of Modesto.
The McHenry House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
