Located in a village originally called "Duwumps."

David S. "Doc" Maynard was the first Anglo settler in what Duwumps (what became Seattle, WA); he was convinced to move north from Olympia, WA, by the Salish Chief Seattle himself. Maynard and subsequent settlers retained the name "Seattle" in honor of the chief but their anglicization of the name corrupted it from its native pronounciation, "See-ahlsh.'
