Walker-Warner designed this premium winery for Augustin and Valeria Huneeus, immigrants who left their native Chile with the rise of Augusto Pinochet. Walker-Warner designed the winery on a property of 280 acres, once owned from the 1940s-early-1980s by the San Francisco restauranteur, George Mardikian. Amid great competition, the Huseeuns purchased the Mardikian property in 1990. As it had never been cultivated as a winery by Mardikian (although he intended to do so), the land was not infested with phylloxera, an insect that decimated Napa Valley wineries in the 1980s.
Much of the winery is arranged in a crescent shape, carved into a hillside. Subterranean spaces account for 1,200 linear feet and 17,000 square feet of caves and tunnels.
