This area became a hotspot for biotechnology companies and research centers in the 1990s and 2000s. Zymogenetics purchased the old Seattle City Light Power Plant, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center greatly expanded, and the University of Washington developed a research facility all clustering in the South Lake Union corridor. The State of Washington, under Governor Christine Gregoire, sought to spur economic development in this area and 14 others across the state by awarding five grants worth $1 million each to these competing groups.
